Nintendogs Wiki

For the item, see Treats.

A treat is a form of positive reinforcement that improves obedience training in both Nintendogs and Nintendogs + Cats. Rewarding dogs with a treat during trick training makes them hold their tricks for longer in both games.

In Nintendogs[]

Though not required, treats are useful in encouraging pets to cooperate when they aren't interested in training or won't hold a command long enough.

Some tricks require repeated handling of the dog-- such as "Shake" and "Spin"-- which might upset them. The primary use of giving a dog treats is to make them happy again when they become too angry to respond to the player, allowing them to train for longer periods of time.

In Nintendogs, treats can be unlocked in the Discount Shop on Walks after earning at least 300 Trainer Points.

In Nintendogs + Cats[]

Treats have two primary uses.

Unlike Nintendogs, stroking a dog in Nintendogs + Cats is not an alternative form of reward during trick training, making treats less optional than before. Feeding the dog different treats will help them hold tricks, which will become necessary in more difficult Obedience cups.

Using treats during Walks can also teach the dog to avoid obstacles such as puddles, mailboxes, and fire hydrants.

The more the player rewards their dog with treats on walks and with tricks, the more obedient they'll become.
